I find Sugar Sugar to be rather sacharine. I hope #1 is better.

The 5th Dimension too are considered rather saccharine and "Aquarius" kinda matches their reputation, but turning "Let the Sunshine In" into a massive funky Hey-Jude-like coda is brilliant and blistering.

Do we still have styles of sounds coming out of specific cities anymore? I think the nearest we've had lately is crunk coming out of Atlanta but more really the entire south. There's something sweet and cool about the Philadelphia sound. Always up for making cool music but also happy to sit back and romance ya too :-)

Some sitting on the dock of the bay seagulls and the David Ruffin sounded a bit like Anderson Paak at the start, he gonna start talking about fillets but no. I think this song is new to me, and I after three listens... I think it's pretty great!

Cynthia on the throne

As for Midnight Confession, I think I'm starting to recognize the Wrecking Crew sound. Kinda Motown, soulful ya know, but with white guys, and a bit leaning on psychedelia, but more interested in being exact and perfect than noodly and experimental... performative psychedelia?

Finally some women -- singing some Laura Nyro no less!

And again they're very happy to keep it sweet and harmonious mostly and then get all funky with "Surry!"

also great to see Masekela on here! He married Miriam Makeba for a few years, which no doubt only excites me :-)

I was going to Google the lyrics because I can't be playing the music right now, and I wondered what they were about. Instead imagine my trauma when I discovered this band is also responsible for everyone's favorite song, Brandy you're a fine girl! Then I tried to search by erasing brandy from the search results, and it turns out about a thousand people have a song about a looking glass with a girl mentioned somewhere. Lord.

Don't think I've heard this song before. I mean this is totally a country song, very silly that it charted everywhere but there but who knows why?

Sloppy but tight, so good!

Wikipedia puts this firmly as funk, and I guess I can kinda hear it. Kinda.

Paul Simon, one of the all time great songwriters. Who could forget the wistful and witty:

De De De De De De De De De De De De De
Do Do Do Do Do Do Do Do Do Do
De De De De De De De De De De De De De De De

Also there was a time in high school where I heard

"jesus loves you" as
"she's a slut yeah"

As we go back in time there will be more weird non sequiturs like this. People really digging on not just theme songs but other artists doing their versions of theme songs.

I was going to ask what the last top 20 hit without lyrics was, because the only one I could think of was Axel F from Beverly Hills Cop back in the 80's. Then I decided to look it up myself, and the real answer is Kenny G playing Auld Lang Syne in 1999.

If you go top 25 or 30, it's the Crazy Frog version of Axel F in 2005. But I don't know whose charts those were based on. I need to cite my sources better.
