I've heard snippets of that song on TV commercials for classic rock compilation albums far more often than I've just heard the song itself. The song's a classic. The baseline is classic. But I've no real attachment to it.

Good message. Wikipedia says later they'd refuse to perform concerts that had no African American acts on the bill... so awesome and 50 years ago, more artists should demand similar

People got it so right here. One of the all time greats. One of music's biggest losses

A very surprising #3 -- if I've heard this before I don't remember it. I don't think it's bad -- some people steel themselves to earnest songs about tough subject matter. It's fine, but I'd understand more if it was like #19.

Bring back harpsichord pop!
Like how this song from 16 years prior has similar energy...

Also interesting that a song without lyrics was so high on the list. In the modern lists, I don't think there was a single one without lyrics.

Interesting - I'm guessing there are lots in the past - like Percy Faith springs to mind. Or was that just my household? No it was all over.

A couple Kenny G songs in the late 90's... his last was Auld Lang Syne in 1999. Axel F in the 80's. A handful of others. Nothing in the top 20 since 1999.

Now get dressed fancy, Vikki, this is going to be a big hit so we want a classy video.
Great, where will we be filming?
In some empty rooms at an office, don't worry about it.

Things I like
1. The organ
2. The change in tempo
3. The change in time signature... I think?
4. The song is about two boats?
5. The dangling apostrophe after mothers

Fascinated by Booker T and the MGs, who became popular and then turned that success into being an amazing backing band.

Lots of questions about why the last word of the bootleg medicine sales post here is "teeth"? What about teeth? Are those being sold as well? Are the antibiotics for the teeth?

Ok listened twice wondering if I just imagined that the song had car horn sound effects. Did the organ and them saying "too crowded" like an old timey horn create a Mandela affect on me?
The number of these things I have never even heard surprises me!

Before it became the 5th country station in our area, we had a wonderful oldies station that would seem to go weeks without replaying a song. Some of the songs were cheesy and outdated, but still love it for its variety. It's definitely where I've heard most of these songs...

Oh just one of the greatest songs of all time
Y'all know I'm not one to beatify a musical period, but can't ignore that the album Sgt. Pepper and the song Respect came out the same year.
