I remember how "important" that song and movie seemed at the time. I feel like it's kind of pablum now.

The whole experience left me disappointed. I looked forward to this new brat pack movie thinking it'd be Breakfast Club 2. But instead, it was a mediocre movie about often-unlikable 20-somethings finding themselves. As a high school kid, it did not resonate with me. Thus the song... kinda meh.

High Fidelity slandered the overall solid work Stevie did in the 80s. I mean, yes he wasn't operating at peak genius but my goodness. 📟📟🎺🎺

I adore the song Part Time Lover. I have a very distinctive memory of 10th grade. I had just dropped Kyle at junior high, and had to navigate through a few residential blocks to turn around to go to school myself. Several mornings in a row, the combination of sun in my eyes and frost building on the windshield as I drove completely blinded me at that spot every time. And in one of those, I learned to properly set the defrost on my car (a thing I somehow hadn't learned before) AND Part Time Lover was playing as I did it.

I don't know what was up at my school, because I was at these junior high dances and such and I never had any of this stuff all of you have been discussing as staples of the dance. Maybe they lucked into some sort of DJ with taste? It was English Beat, ska, new wave, etc? And... JOURNEY! And Hall and Oates, yeah. Rap in about 9th grade forward.

LOLLLL my kid is like, "finally you're playing something I like instead of BTS! You can play this. The restrictions are, one or two BTS per day."
The restrictions, lolllll he's trying. Now he offers me three BTS; he rates Only the Young as 6.75/10. All my kids love Journey which makes me feel like I've been sleeping on them for most of my life.

So I've been watching a lot of Hall and Oates videos. Out of Touch is great for the 80s dancing. Seriously, Oates is really owning it. But there's this weird moment at the 1:34 mark of this video where Hall does a spinning motion with his hand and sings quietly, "Turn around." I don't know what it is, but it creeps me out.

I was going to originally start my Just Rewards project with 1985, as some may remember me requesting favorite songs (I remember "One Night in Bangkok" was a fav). I'm glad I found my hook and picked the pre-Grammy era, though it took me a good year or more, but I wonder what the sliding doors of that selection would have led to.

He's saying "take a look around".
This is maybe my favorite Hall & Oates song! Love it!
Some of Hall's lyrics have to do with his struggle with the unpleasantness of Satanism - I think this one might have a little bit to do with that. I know that sounds strange but you are doing this biographical research so I imagine you will come across the idea. In fact I would be interested to hear what Oates has to say about all that. I've heard different accounts, one where Hall decided that all that stuff wasn't really what it was cracked up to be and another one where he just kind of stuck with it but in a less enthused fashion?

I was just watching Coming to America last night before falling asleep, and Eddie Murphy is also a national treasure. But Patti LaBelle is a much more national treasure much more treasureful a bigger treasure than Eddie Murphy. They're both treasures though.

Michael!! I can't understand it! Why you want to hurt me? You're missing the best nuances of this thing - here's the supremely confident comedian, loved by everyone, good at everything he does... But now he's in the realm of Rick James. He's going to try something new and who knows if it's going to work out? Rick gives him a supportive hug. You can tell from his little smile and glance that he's a bit nervous - all these people in the studio are listening, just like America, just like the whole world - we've never heard him sing in this serious way before! And you're all excited like, what's it going to be like? Oh my goodness I can't believe Eddie Murphy's doing a pop song! What is his voice even like? And the man is a SOPRANO and he sings perfectly in tune and it's absolutely hilarious and great!!! Lyrics? Of course there are lyrics!! Most likely you were so astonished and amazed that you didn't register any words until he got to the chorus. That's okay. He really is a national treasure.

My washer is broken and I feel like it could be Tahlvin's fault because he posted about it here during a time when we're all trying to avoid contagion, and see what happened? And this is Saturday. And I haven't done laundry all week. Because I was waiting for Saturday. Thank God the little kid has enough clothes to make it through the week. The rest of us are s o l. The way my phone has done this amuses me.

You misunderstand. I went through all of that back in high school. I knew the song by heart back then. However, as a fan of Eddie Murphy's comedy, I had no doubt that he could sing. His act and his stint on SNL included numerous impressions of singers, from Elvis to Michael Jackson to Stevie Wonder to James Brown. He has a gifted voice. The only question was what his own singing voice would sound like.

After posting the above comment, I did go back to watch the video, but mostly to see if I would get a glimpse of Rick James and Charlie Murphy together.

Do you think Medusa ever pulls her snakes back in a pony tail? Maybe sometimes she doesn't want a head that looks like a bunch of snakes and just wants them out of the way so she can get stuff done.
